The Workers’ Party’s representative in Meath, Séamus McDonagh, has this morning welcomed the launch of Together for Yes in Meath, which officially took place last night (Wednesday) in the Newgrange Hotel in Navan.
McDonagh, who chaired last night’s launch, said:
“Last night was a momentous occasion. It brought together groups from Kells, Navan, Trim, Athboy and Ashbourne to name a few. We packed one of the biggest room’s in Co. Meath with a crowd full of all generations, political backgrounds and none, men and women, all united in a desire to see the back of the 8th Amendment.”
McDonagh continued:
“In 1983 I canvassed in rural Meath against the 8th Amendment. Our campaigners couldn’t find anywhere to rent a meeting room, we were physically and verbally attacked as we canvassed, and we were, to say the least, in the minority. The Workers’ Party, for many long years after that, was alone in pushing a consistent pro-choice line in Meath.
“There is no doubt but that this time round, the ‘Yes’ campaign have the momentum. Every major political party in the country has members canvassing for a yes vote, and, more importantly, the grassroots campaigners are leading the way. That’s exactly the model of Meath Together for Yes.”
The Workers’ Party representative continued:
“The reality is that this referendum is not about expanding abortion in Ireland. It’s about facing up to the reality that women in Ireland already have abortions – and they deserve better than being forced to travel to another country for basic healthcare.”
