The International Section of the Workers’ Party of Ireland has transmitted the following message of solidarity to the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) on the action for a General Strike in Greece on 12th January 2018.

Dear comrades,

The Workers Party of Ireland and the Party trade union group sends warm greetings
and extends best wishes, solidarity and support to PAME, the All Workers Militant
Front, on the action for a General Strike all over Greece on 12 January 2018 in
protest against the SYRIZA led government which, in active collaboration with the
European Union, plans to restrict workers’ rights and, in particular, the right to
strike. The proposed legislation would reduce family benefits, introduce a new
process for foreclosures on overdue loans, and make it more difficult to call a strike. These government proposals take place in the context of crippling austerity
measures; attacks on workers’ wages, benefits and living conditions; high
unemployment, especially for young people; the destruction of branch level
collective agreements; assaults on the national minimum wage; mass layoffs and the
legalisation of “lock outs”; pension cuts; the abolition of Sunday as a day off work; a
reduction in unemployment benefits and related social protection; a massive
programme of privatisation of state companies, in collusion with the capitalist class
and the European Union.

The right to strike is fundamental to the rights of workers. It is a vital weapon in the
hands of the working class for its protection, the defence of its gains and the raising
of its confidence and political consciousness in the class struggle. The WPI and Irish workers extend their solidarity to PAME on 12 January 2018. The
future for working people cannot be secured under the failed capitalist system. This
can only be guaranteed through workers’ power and socialism.
