The Workers’ Party has called on the Government to use the upcoming budget to show commitment on Traveller accommodation on the anniversary of the Carrickmines fire.
Seamus McDonagh Workers’ Party rep for Meath, said: “On 10th October, this country will mark the first anniversary of the Carrickmines fire and we will remember Willie Lynch and Tara Gilbert and their daughters, Kelsey and Jodie; Willie’s brother Jimmy Lynch; and Thomas and Sylvia Connors and their children Jim, Christy and Mary. The very next day, the Government will announce the budget.”
“We are calling on the Government to look into any of the recent reports on the complete lack of facilities, the crowded conditions, and the temporary nature of Traveller accommodation and think of what they would wish for their own families. Mr McDonagh continued: “What happened in Carrickmines should never be allowed to happen again. But the daily prejudice and discrimination that Travellers face means that it is all too easy for people to ignore the need for immediate action on Traveller accommodation. The upcoming budget is the perfect chance for the Government to commit to improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in this country.”
