Workers’ Party Councillor Ted Tynan has condemned the way that workers at Clancy’s bar and restaurant in Cork city centre were informed by mobile phone text that their jobs were gone.
Cllr. Tynan said that no matter what economic circumstances existed at the company there was no excuse whatsoever for the appallingly callous way the workers’ were notified at 3 o’clock in the morning.
“Once again an employer has acted according to the law of the jungle”, said Cllr. Tynan”. “Nearly 40 workers woken at 3am with a text message bearing this shocking news is an utter disgrace. It is high time that serious action is taken against employers who treat their staff in this manner. These staff have been loyal and many are long-standing employees of this 200 year old establishment. They deserve better”.
The Workers’ Party councillor compared the situation to the treatment of the Clery’s workers in Dublin and has called on workers, the trade union movement and the general public to rally in support of the Clancy’s staff.
