The Workers’ Party have welcomed the announcement that the government is to buy the site in Moore Street, Dublin where some of the final moments of the Easter 1916 Rising took place and where Commandant Padraig Pearse surrendered on behalf of the Irish Republic proclaimed earlier that week.
Workers Party Dublin City Councillor, Éilis Ryan, said that while the decision to buy the Moore Street national monument was to be welcomed, credit is due in particular to the individuals who gave up much of their time over the past decade campaigning for the buildings to be saved and declared a national monument.
“At last the government has recognised the importance of this site which in any other country would have had its vital role in the history of the state designated many years ago. We should be forever grateful to the activists who saved this site and without whom these buildings might have been bulldozed years ago. In particular I would like to pay tribute to May Mac Giolla, her late husband Tomás and others who campaigned tirelessly for this result.”, said Cllr. Ryan.
“I now hope that the Moore Street buildings are restored in a tasteful and appropriate manner and that they will be available to future generations and accessible to the public”, said the Workers’ Party councillor.
