The Workers’ Party have condemned the jailing of five anti-water charge protesters in Dublin today (Thursday) saying the decision was an outrageous attack on the right to protest and an affront to the principles of justice.

Workers’ Party Dublin Councillor Éilis Ryan said the ruling was a confirmation of how the judicial system is being manipulated to serve corporate interests and not those of the working class.

Councillor Ryan said “This will not deter people from protesting against the installation of water meters and will be met with a firm response by the communities and the anti-water charges movement”

One of the five jailed, Bernie Hughes, is a former Workers’ Party member and while no longer in the party is a very effective and dedicated community representative of many years standing in the Finglas area.

Cllr. Ryan has called for a massive turnout at Saturday’s national protest against political policing at the Central Bank in Dame Street (2pm).
