The Workers Party of Ireland has learned of the death of Margot Honecker, communist, political activist and widow of former GDR leader, Erich Honecker, who passed away in Chile at the age of 89.
Ms Honecker was a prominent member of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) and served as education minister in the German Democratic Republic. She vehemently opposed the restoration of capitalism and defended the socialist principles of the GDR writing on the 10th anniversary of German reunification: “In the east, we never knew social incertitude, need and misery. Now, monster money has taken the place of human relations.” She also noted that since unification: “Xenophobia and neo-fascism are developing in the east. All that is explained by the recent past. The roots of this evil are inherent in the capitalist social order.”
