The Minister for Environment, Housing, Planning and Local Government Simon Coveney has been likened to the legendary King Canute trying to hold back the tide if he expects waste companies to voluntarily agree not to use the new pay-by-weight system as an excuse to rip off customers.
The comparison was made by Dublin North West Workers Party representative Jimmy Dignam who said the minister was delusional if he believes the waste companies would comply with any such voluntary code.
“It is in the nature of nature of the beast for waste companies and indeed all capitalists to maximise their profits and the record of private waste collectors has shown that they will jump at any opportunity to hike up their already exorbitant charges” said Dignam who repeated his party’s call for the re-municipalisation of waste collection.
