Repeal the 8th on voters’ minds in Dublin Central

Cllr Éilis Ryan says voters looking for clear commitment to repeal the 8th Amendment

As the General Election campaign enters its final days, the Workers’ Party candidate in Dublin Central – Cllr Éilis Ryan – has said that, along with obvious issues such as water charges, housing, job creation and deprivation, voters are raising the need to repeal the Eighth Amendment and seeking clear commitments from candidates.

“At a time when most people feel they have been bypassed by the recovery, issues such as water charges, housing, job creation and deprivation are obviously at the forefront of doorstep concerns.”, said Cllr. Ryan

“But the need to repeal the Eighth Amendment is also being raised on the canvass, and it is particularly heartening that it is often being raised by men who feel strongly that women should have choice and bodily autonomy.

“Voters raising this issue are looking for unambiguous commitments from candidates and parties not just regarding repeal of the 8th Amendment, but also in support of reproductive choice more broadly.”

“Repeal of the Eighth Amendment is a red line issue for the Workers’ Party, and I have no doubt that a referendum to repeal would be passed overwhelmingly in Dublin Central”, Cllr Ryan said.
